TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE.  July 27, 1964

Two persons were killed and three others were injured Sunday afternoon, July 26, 1964 when a rock slide thundered down on a nature hiking party of 19 near the snout of the Nisqually Glacier on Mount Rainier.

Killed outright in the avalanche was Elise Starr, 14, of Los Angeles. She was spending the summer on the mountain with her step father, Jess Levine, a Los Angeles school teacher and naturalist.

Mrs. Janet Leettola, 18, of Kent, died of  injuries shortly before an Air Force rescue helicopter from McChord Air Force Base arrived on the scene.

Taken to a Morton hospital for treatment were Mary MacAdam, 10, of Long Beach, California and James Beauregard of Brooklyn, New York. Joyce Bower of Portland was cut and bruised on the leg.

Jan lost her life the year we graduated in an avalanche on Mt. Rainier. First funeral I ever went to, so sad!

Connie, thank you for your memories... there were many classmates there and unfortunately I was not 'in mind' to recognize/thank them... I sincerely thank you now for your attendance and memories, and take the opportunity of wishing you and yours the best of good times and amazing adventures in 2014, including our 50th reunion!  Thom Leettola

Yes, I remember hearing about Jan's death due to avalance. It has stuck with me all these years. So sorry that a classmate so young is gone before she was able to reachher potential. She was a quiet person and well liked by those who came in contact with her in class or at the lunch room.

I was also at her funeral--so sad to say goodbye to such a close friend.  Today would have been her birthday--I always have her in mind on January 13th and July 26th.
